What drives Modarabas on the PSX
A modaraba is a Shariah-compliant investment vehicle: a management company runs the business and shares profit with certificate holders on an agreed ratio, with losses borne by the capital. Most listed modarabas in Pakistan are effectively leasing and asset-financing businesses in Islamic form, so they behave like small non-bank lenders rather than like funds.
What to watch
- The State Bank policy rate — it sets both the return demanded on new financing and the cost of the borrowing behind it.
- Asset quality on the lease and financing book, which deteriorates faster than a bank's because the customers are smaller.
- The management company's profit-sharing ratio, which decides how much of the return reaches certificate holders.
- Regulatory capital and the SECP's modaraba framework, which limit gearing and permitted activity.

- Combined market cap Market capitalisationShare price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding — what the market says the whole company is worth. Use it, not the share price, to compare the size of two businesses. Glossary
- Rs 19.7B 0.1% of the market
- Median P/E Median P/EThe middle P/E among a sector's profitable companies: half are cheaper, half dearer. Unlike an average, one extreme company cannot drag it. Glossary
- 18.4
- Median dividend yield Median dividend yieldThe middle dividend yield among a sector's dividend payers. Companies that paid nothing are left out, so it describes a typical payer, not the whole sector. Glossary

- Breadth today Market breadthHow many stocks rose (advancers) against how many fell (decliners). An index rising while most stocks fall means a few heavyweights are carrying it. Glossary

What this means: A split session — risers and fallers were roughly balanced, so the average hides a lot.
